Powering Canadian homes: Fronius GEN24

With the Fronius GEN24, you can experience the highest PV yields (even in the shade), an integrated basic backup power supply function as standard, and unbeatable flexibility in system design. The award-winning inverter for the home is now available in North America.

The Fronius GEN24, which has won several awards in Europe, is a state-of-the-art string inverter that has now been developed for the North American market. Thanks to pioneering technology and innovative design, the Fronius GEN24 ensures the highest PV yields on every roof.

Unbeatable PV efficiency thanks to intelligent shade management

Even with overshadowed PV modules, the integrated Dynamic Peak Manager means that the Fronius GEN24 delivers the highest possible energy yield, while the intelligent and highly efficient MPP tracking algorithm eliminates the need for performance optimizers with this system. Not only does this result in lower costs due to fewer system components, but also minimizes the cost of installation and servicing.

The Fronius GEN24 adapts to all conditions, whether suspended, horizontal, or in a special mounting bracket, and both indoors and outdoors. Thanks to its innovative SuperFlex design, the inverter also delivers unmatched flexibility in system planning and ensures the highest yields even on complex roofs. What’s more, the broad input voltage range means the Fronius GEN24 is able to achieve an efficient solar harvest even with different roof orientations.

“With the Fronius GEN24, our customers benefit from impressive efficiency and reliability. Our inverter delivers unbeatable energy yields even on the most complex roofs and, thanks to the Dynamic Peak Manager, doesn’t require performance optimizers, even when shade comes into play. This is photovoltaic technology that makes sense for everyone; simple, efficient, and future-proof,” explains Elisabeth Engelbrechtsmüller-Strauss, CEO of Fronius.

Long service life and dependability all part of the package

The inverter performance is highly temperature-dependent, which is why the Fronius GEN24 is equipped with efficient active cooling technology. Thanks to active cooling, Fronius inverters last longer and deliver the best possible performance even when outside temperatures are high. For PV system owners, this means dependable operation, which in turn guarantees faster amortization of the PV system.

With the Fronius GEN24, customers benefit not only from reliable solar power production, but also from a high degree of energy dependability. Thanks to the PV Point, the Fronius inverter offers an integrated basic backup power supply function as standard. The most important electrical loads in the home (such as a refrigerator) can be supplied with energy via a backup power socket.

Easy installation coupled with ongoing support

Installers enjoy unprecedented ease of installation with the Fronius GEN24. The Fronius inverter is simple to install and connect thanks to quick-acting screws and push-in spring clamps. The generous connection area also offers enough space for any additional components needed in the future.

Canada Greener Homes Program

Greener Homes Grant (NRCan):

The first tranche of funding ($2.6B) for the Canadian Greener Homes Grant was fully subscribed in early 2024.  Applicants that received their APA numbers are still eligible to complete their retrofits and claim the grant, but the program is closed for new applicants.

Canada Greener Homes Affordability Program (NRCan):

$800 million over five years, starting in 2025-26, to launch a new Canada Greener Homes Affordability Program that will support the direct installation of energy efficiency retrofits for Canadian households with low- to median-incomes. The budget is clear that this additional $800m is for new NRCan grant funding and is to work with the existing Greener Homes Loan program, but it is now clear that there will be no new grant applications possible in 2024.  This information is found on page 79 of the budget.

Greener Homes Loan (CMHC):

The existing 0% interest, 10yr amortization loan of up to $40,000 is still in place with no change to the application process including pre- and post-audits.  Capita Energy believes that, at the current usage rate, there is sufficient remaining funds for new loan applications through to at least the end of 2024.  We will update our customers as we learn more.  Loan website here.

Investment Tax Credits

Clean Technology ITC:

The Clean Technology ITC provides a 20-30% refundable tax credit for Canadian businesses to invest in clean technologies such as solar and battery storage.  While the eligibility window started in March 2023, the legislation is still working its way through Parliament as Bill C-59.  The budget indicates on page 182 that “With the support and collaboration of Parliamentarians, the government anticipates Bill C-59 receiving Royal Assent before June 1, 2024.”  Further information on the Clean Technology ITC is available on our most recent webinar here.

Clean Electricity ITC:

The Clean Electricity ITC provides a 10-15% refundable tax credit to certain taxable and non-taxable corporations, including corporations owned by municipalities or Indigenous communities, and pension investment corporations who invest in clean electricity generating assets such as solar and battery storage.  The eligibility period started on budget day (April 16, 2024) for projects that did not begin construction before March 28, 2023.  Enabling legislation for this ITC is expected to be introduced later in 2024.

The Solar Advantage

In recent years, the adoption of solar energy has been on the rise across the globe, and Canada is no exception. The advantages that solar energy offers to commercial buildings are becoming increasingly apparent. From cost savings to environmental benefits, solar power is proving to be a game-changer for businesses. In this blog post, we’ll explore the benefits of solar energy for commercial buildings and why it’s a wise investment for businesses of all sizes.

Cost Savings

One of the most significant advantages of installing solar systems on commercial buildings is the potential for substantial cost savings. Solar energy systems reduce electricity bills, which can be a significant expense for businesses. By generating their own electricity from sunlight, commercial properties can become more self-sufficient, reducing their reliance on traditional grid energy. With net metering programs in place in many regions, excess energy generated by the solar panels can be credited to their account and drawn against later in winter months.

Long-term Financial Stability

Investing in solar systems for your commercial building offers a predictable and stable source of energy for years to come. Unlike traditional energy sources, the sun’s energy is free and abundant. Solar systems typically have long lifespans and require minimal maintenance. This means that businesses can enjoy consistent energy production and budgetary stability, reducing the impact of volatile energy costs over time.

Environmental Responsibility

Canadian consumers value businesses that demonstrate a strong commitment to environmental responsibility. Solar energy is a clean, renewable source of power that reduces reliance on fossil fuels. By choosing solar, commercial buildings can lower their carbon footprint, aligning with their customers’ environmentally conscious values and fostering a positive brand image.

Government Incentives

Governments at various levels offer incentives and rebates to encourage businesses to adopt solar energy, accelerating Canada’s transition to a net-zero electric grid by 2035. These incentives can significantly reduce the upfront cost of installing solar panels, making it an attractive financial option. In Canada, the federal government provides programs like the Clean Technology Investment Tax Credit (ITC). This 30% refundable ITC promotes low-emission energy generation, including solar. It significantly reduces upfront costs, making solar an even more appealing choice. By leveraging the ITC, businesses can further enhance their cost savings while embracing sustainable energy. It’s a win-win opportunity for businesses of all sizes.

Enhance Property Value

Investing in solar panels can increase the value of commercial properties. Solar-equipped buildings are seen as more energy-efficient, environmentally friendly, and attractive to eco-conscious tenants and buyers. This can translate into higher property values and better marketability in the long run.

Overview

As Canada’s leading solar and storage distributor and technical services provider, we have seen firsthand the remarkable benefits that solar energy brings to commercial buildings. From substantial cost savings and long-term financial stability to environmental responsibility and enhanced property value, the advantages of solar power are clear. If you are a business owner looking to reduce energy costs, improve sustainability, and secure a brighter future for your commercial building, solar energy is a wise investment that will pay dividends for years to come. Contact us today to learn more about how solar energy can benefit your business and to start generating clean, renewable energy for your commercial building.

In an era where renewable energy is becoming increasingly crucial, the KWIKWASUT’INUXW HAXWA’MIS FIRST NATION (KHFN) Solar Project stands as a shining example of sustainable innovation. Funded by Coast Funds and NRCAN, this marks a significant step toward reducing diesel consumption and fostering a cleaner environment for the KHFN community. With its impressive scope, dedicated team, and a combination of distributed solar generation with advanced battery energy storage system (BESS), the project paves the way for a brighter, greener future.

Goals and Design Scope:

The project commenced with KHFN’s ambitious goal of reducing operating costs, greenhouse gas emissions and creating resiliency for this remote community.  KHFN’s Gilford Island site operates its own diesel microgrid which provides power to 26 homes and 12 community buildings through a 14kv overhead distribution system.  The concept was to add solar PV and energy storage systems to the existing microgrid to reduce their dependance on the diesel generation and hit their goals.  Capita Energy, with their engineering expertise was brought on to support KHFN and help them complete a feasibility study.  One of the key factors in developing this project was listening to the residents in the village and incorporating their suggestions into the feasibility study.  The results showed that installing a 250kW, 1.1 MWh BESS and a 221kW Solar PV array had the potential to offset over 70,000 liters of diesel consumption annually.

Timeline and Milestones:

The journey towards achieving sustainable energy independence for KHFN began with an initial site visit in September 2020. Following the thorough assessment, Charge Solar’s engineering team was engaged through Q1 of 2021 to design the BESS and Solar PV arrays (114kW of Solar PV is centrally located near the BESS and Generators, with the remaining 107kW distributed on the homes and building throughout the village). This design allowed KHFN to incrementally install the PV systems, gaining the benefits instantly as each stage was completed. The endeavor has made significant progress since then, with the project reaching substantial completion as of May 2023. The final stage is set to conclude by the end of 2023, signifying a remarkable achievement for the community.

Community Collaboration, Training and Potential:

The successful execution of the project owes much to the collaboration between locals like Howard McCoy and Bruce Landsdowne, Capita Energy and the KHFN community. Band members called upon Capita Energy for guidance during the installation process, receiving comprehensive training on various aspects of solar technology, including fall arrest procedures, hands-on installation training, and system design fundamentals. This community involvement not only strengthens the sense of ownership but also empowers the band members to maintain their new microgrid system. The KHFN Solar Project has not only delivered immediate benefits but also laid the foundation for future growth and development. By significantly reducing pollution and providing a peaceful environment, the community can enjoy a higher quality of life while looking for opportunities that were once prohibited by energy limits.  The community is exploring an ice plant to support local fishermen and the possibility of eco-tourism.

Challenges and Results:

To achieve the project’s objectives, Capita Energy meticulously selected high-quality equipment, and components. Developing a microgrid solution for remote communities must take careful consideration for the maintenance of the equipment selected.  This meant that traditional large centrally located PV and storage was not an option and forced a distributed architecture using smaller components.  Small PV systems consisting of QCELL modules, Fast-Rack’s ULTRA racking and Fronius inverters were deployed throughout the rooftops.  The BESS was two mirrored systems built with modular KORE battery components.  The control system from ComAp was used to blend all these components together and control the microgrid. This state-of-the-art system not only offsets diesel consumption but also integrates seamlessly with the electrical grid. Its ability to communicate with the grid enables efficient energy management and contributes to the stability and reliability of the entire system.

The KHFN Solar Project on Gilford Island exemplifies their commitment toward sustainable energy and environmental stewardship. By embracing solar and storage, the KHFN community not only secures a cleaner, greener future but also paves the way for sustainable economic growth and a thriving eco-tourism industry.  Capita Energy is proud to be a partner with such a progressive community.

Capita Energy has experienced a steady rise in its engagement with solar and storage initiatives for First Nations communities. With the recent unveiling of the Clean Electricity Federal Tax Credit, which offers a 15% tax credit on investments in solar for indigenous communities, and an impressive $140M in government funding allocated specifically for indigenous projects in British Columbia, we are expecting significant expansion within this sector in 2024.
